What Is 3D Printing?
3D printing, explained simply
3D printing builds a physical object layer by layer from a digital 3D model. Instead of cutting material away, a 3D printer adds material only where it is needed, so complex shapes, one-off parts and custom designs become affordable.
How does a 3D printer work?
The most common type is FDM (fused deposition modelling), the technology we use on our print farm:
- A 3D model is designed in CAD software or downloaded, and saved as an STL or STEP file.
- A program called a slicer cuts the model into hundreds of thin layers and creates instructions for the printer.
- The printer melts a plastic thread called filament and draws each layer, one on top of the other.
- When the print finishes, supports are removed and the part can be sanded, painted or assembled.
What materials can you 3D print?
PLA, PETG, ABS, ASA, flexible TPU, polycarbonate, nylon and carbon fibre reinforced plastics, each with different strength and heat resistance. See our materials guide and filament in Egypt.
What is 3D printing used for?
- Prototypes for startups and engineers.
- Architecture models for students and offices. See architecture models.
- Spare and replacement parts that are hard to find.
- Small-batch production without expensive moulds.
- Gifts, decor and collectibles. See 3D printed gifts.
How much does 3D printing cost in Egypt?
A 3D printing service charges for the material (by weight) and the machine time. See how we calculate it on our pricing page. To print at home, see 3D printer prices in Egypt.
Words you will hear
- Layer height: how thick each layer is. Thinner layers look smoother but take longer.
- Infill: the internal pattern inside a part. More infill means stronger and heavier.
- Supports: temporary structures that hold up overhangs while printing.
- Build volume: the biggest object a printer can make in one piece.
- Multicolour (AMS, CFS, ACE): systems that switch between filaments to print in several colours.
Should I buy a printer or use a service?
If you need a few parts, a service like SolidForms in Cairo is faster and cheaper. If you will print every week, owning a printer pays off. Start with the best 3D printer for beginners.
